What’s new on Kete?
Since our last update Kete has published 32 reviews, extracts and interviews. Read on to find out about regular features, upcoming content, including for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, and what was most-read in the May to July period.
Bestsellers
The weekly bestsellers list is now joined by the new monthly Aotearoa Children’s Junior Fiction and YA Bestseller List. View the April, May and June lists. This initiative is aimed at spotlighting Aotearoa junior fiction, graphic novels and young adult fiction (read more here).
We’re publishing these lists on Kete’s social pages (we use Stories for Instagram) and from the Coalition’s Facebook page too.
Cover Story
Each month we run a Cover Story feature, focussing on one intriguing, beautiful or compelling book cover. We talk to the people involved in creating and designing the book, including authors, illustrators, editors, publishers and designers about the processes they go through to create a cover, and about the decisions that are made and why — what they might be trying to communicate to a potential reader about a book.
Read a round up of recent Cover Stories here.
Kete Questionnaire
On a monthly basis Kete also runs a deep dive interview with an Aotearoa writer. Read the latest with poet Megan Kitching, here.
Coming soon: Te wiki o te reo Māori
From 11 to 17 September Kete will again be guest edited by Ruth Smith. The site will switch to te reo Māori with review, newsletter and other content exclusively in te reo Māori.
Coming soon: What I’m reading
A new fortnightly What I’m reading short feature, talking to writers and other bookish types, will begin in the next weeks.

We’ve seen 37% growth in unique visitors to the site for May to July, compared with the same period last year. This is good, incremental progress and our aim is to grow more – and more. The platform rebuild — currently in planning phase — funded through Manatū Taonga, will play an important part in this, but we’re still very focused on creating engaging content that supports Aotearoa NZ books and attracts readers to Kete in the interim.
